Joint custody
Give kids of divorce what's best

Times Union - Perspective

For as long as there have been separations and divorces, there have been issues of child custody. When the family unit is intact, the issue of who spends what amount of time with the children is usually one of mutual agreement or circumstance. It is only when there is a parting of the ways that this becomes an issue of (often heated) debate. With the divorce rate continuing to skyrocket, the issue of how much time each parent is legally entitled to spend with his or her child is one that is more and more common.

Fathers are critical to the success of families

I wanted to thank the Times Union for the recent article, "A show of support for new dads" by Rick Karlin, for the early Father's Day gift. The response has been tremendous and now the need is crystal clear.

The role and responsibility of fathers relative to the successful functioning of a family is pivotal and cannot be overemphasized. In addition, system impacts on fatherhood are as much to blame for our social ills, as we are as individuals. Our economy, government, education, criminal justice, environment and health all equally impact the atmosphere that creates unstable families. In turn, these attributes contribute to unstable communities.

Fathers Inc. is dedicated to strengthening the community and family infrastructure by encouraging and enabling the positive involvement of fathers in the lives of their children. We wholeheartedly recognize the incredible contributions, dedication and struggles of mothers and other caretakers on behalf of children.

The response received from the Feb. 1 article was a great boost to beginning and continuing a much-needed community service. A service that will benefit our society, communities and families for generations to come.
